  1. Stevie Wonder Present Wife

The first 2 Motown albums by the lovely Syreeta both of them recorded under the supervision of her partner Stevie Wonder! The genius of these records is hard to describe accurately a sort of spacey soul approach that builds on the work of Stevie at the time, but which also has traces of Minnie Riperton and it’s own sort of fragile, gentle, groove.

The Syreeta album is very spare often just featuring bits of electronics and percussion next to Syreeta’s pure and honest vocals and while the Stevie Wonder Presents album works in slightly fuller arrangements, the sound is still nicely stripped-down overall very unique for the time, not only for Motown, but for all of mainstream soul as well! I Love Every Liitle Thing About You 2. Black Maybe 3. Keep Him Like He Is 4. She’s Leaving Home 6.

Stevie Wonder Presents: Syreeta is the second full-length release by Motown recording artist Syreeta.

What Love Has Joined Together 7. How Many Days 8. Baby Don’t You Let Me Lose This 9. To Know You Is To Love You Without doubt one of the best female vocalist albums ever made, Yet still it remains largely overlooked as a Stevie Wonder side-project withhis then wife Syreeta. Syreeta’s incredibly delicate voice fits perfectly with Stevie’s experimental use of synthesisers. Margouleff andCecil are credited as synth programmers and TONTO is clearly at work in the very opening bars of the album with a wonderful electronic rhythmic effect. The Moog basslines growl throughout – the first two tracks in particular are awash with Stevie’s synth playing – and the use of real strings on Keep Him Like He Is and What Love Has Joined Together givethis album a powerful uplifting feel despite its daring experimentation.

It seems Stevie felt he could push his ideas even further on this album – released on an obscure Motown off-shoot – than his own high-profile Motown projects. ————————————————————————————- Syreeta – 1974 – Stevie Wonder Presents Syreeta Tracks 1. I’m Goin’ Left 2. Spinnin’ and Spinnin’ 3. Your Kiss Is Sweet 4. Come and Get This Stuff 5.

Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers 7. Just a Little Piece of You 8. Waitin’ for the Postman 9. When Your Daddy’s Not Around 10.

I Wanna Be by Your Side 11. Universal Sound of the World (Your Kiss Is Sweet) Bonus 12. Harmour Love 13. Let’s Make A Deal 14. One To One After a promising but uneven debut, Syreeta summoned her creative strengths and worked in tandem with creative partner Stevie Wonder to produce another album in 1974. The result was Stevie Wonder Presents Syreeta, the most delightful and consistent album of her career. As with Syreeta, this album pursues a combination of smooth soul tracks ideally suited to Syreeta’s silky vocal range and more experimental outings that are creatively in line with Wonder’s then-current solo work.

However, the eclecticism that weighed down Syreeta is transformed into a strength on Stevie Wonder Presents Syreeta: the tracks pursue a dazzling array of different pop-soul styles, but everything is kept in check by solid performances from everyone involved and tight arrangements that keep the album’s hook-filled songs on track. Highlights on the first side include “ Spinnin’ and Spinnin‘,” a clever tune that uses a spiraling, carnival-styled keyboard motif to bring its tale of an unwieldy relationship to life, and “ Come And Get This Stuff,” a funky pop number built on an infectious sing-along chorus. Another notable track is “ Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers,” a delicate breakup ballad with a stunning, ethereal vocal from Syreeta. On the second side, a majority of the running time is devoted to an Abbey Road-style medley of short tracks.

Everything here is catchy and well-arranged, but the highlight is “ I Wanna Be By Your Side“, a heart-melting romantic duet between Syreeta and fellow Motown solo artist G.C. All in all, Stevie Wonder Presents Syreeta is the shining moment of Syreeta’s solo career and a lost highlight of 1970’s soul in general. Any fans of Stevie Wonder owe it to themselves to track this album down because it makes a worthy companion to albums like Talking Book and Innervisions.

Syreeta wright

R&B Singer, Songwriter. She emerged out of the 1970s Motown scene and was the first wife of singer/songwriter Stevie Wonder. She collaborated with him on several Motown hits, including 'Signed, Sealed, Delivered,' 'If You Really Love Me' and 'It's A Shame.' Syreeta Wright was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on August 3, 1946. She began singing at age 4.

Her father was killed in the Korean War and she was raised by her mother and grandmother, and attended private school after her family moved to Detroit, Michigan when she was 11 years old. There was a move to South Carolina when she was age 15 and then she returned to Detroit. Wright had dreams of being a ballet dancer but the costs of training discouraged her from pursuing this dream. She soon developed an intrest in writing and singing.

Music led her to the offices of Motown Records. In the 1960s, Wright worked as a secretary in one of Motown's arranging departments. She later became a performer after being discovered by Motown writer/producer Brian Holland. Berry Gordy simplified Wright's name to Rita and she began recording background vocals during the 1960s releasing a single of her own in 1967 'I Can't Give Back the Love I Feel For You,' an Ashford and Simpson underground classic originally written for Diana Ross. The following year, and following the suggestion by Stevie Wonder, she became a songwriter. Wright went on to make a bigger splash at Motown as a songwriter. One early success between the two was the song 'It's A Shame' for the Spinners.

By 1970, the collaboration with Wonder saw the release of the song 'Signed, Sealed Delivered, I'm Your's,' a song she co-wrote with Wonder, Lee Garrett and Lula Hardaway. That same year, she collaborated with Wonder on his album 'Where I'm Coming From,' co-writing the songs 'Do Yourself A Favor,' 'Something Out of the Blue,' 'If you Really Love Me' (a song on which she sang) and 'Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer.' Wonder and Wright dated and eventually married on September 14, 1970 and although they were divorced just 18 months later, they continued to work together for several years. She then married drummer Curtis Roberstson whom she also later divorced. In 1972, she released her debut album, simply entitled 'Syreeta'.

In 1974, Wright and Wonder collaborated again on the album 'Stevie Wonder Presents Syreeta.' This set brought her chart success with the singles 'Your Kiss Is Sweet' and 'Spinning & Spinning'. On background vocal chores, the line-up included singers Deniece Williams and the late Minnie Riperton. Wright and Wonder's last collaboration came with the song 'Harmour Love,' which became another crossover hit and was later included on her 1977 album 'One to One.'

She recorded one album with G. Cameron, entitled 'Rich Love, Poor Love,' in 1977, before collaborating with Billy Preston, an association that saw the pair producing the film 'Fast Break.' The couples major success came with the U. Top 10 hit, 'With You I'm Born Again,' in 1979. In 1980, Wright recorded the song 'And So It Begins,' which has become a rare grove over the years. She and Preston completed a further album project in 1981 and a singe release entitled 'Go For It.' That same year she released the album 'Set My Love In Motion.'

Shortly thereafter, family affairs took over and Wright stopped recording for a while. She returned to the studio in the late 1980s, recording several tracks for Ian Levine's Motor City label, including a solo rendition of 'With You I'm Born Again' and new duets with Bill Preston. Throughout her career Wright wrote, or recorded with Sheree Brown, George Howard, Gary Bartz, Patrice Rushen, Wayne Henderson, Jeffrey Osborne, The Stair Steps, George Duke, Quincy Jones and Donald Byrd among others, at various times.
